Literal Movement Grammars

چکیده

Literal movement grammars (LMGs) provide a general account of extraposition phenomena through an attribute mechanism allowing top-down displacement of syntactical information. LMGs provide a simple and efficient treatment of complex linguistic phenomena such as cross-serial dependencies in German and Dutch—separating the treatment of natural language into a parsing phase closely resembling traditional contextfree treatment, and a disambiguation phase which can be carried out using matching, as opposed to full unification employed in most current grammar formalisms of linguistical relevance.

A Simple Uniform Semantics for Concatenation-based Grammar

We define a more formal version of literal movement grammar (LMG) as outlined in [Gro95c], in such a way that it provides a simple framework that incorporates a large family of grammar formalisms (Head Grammar [Pol84], LCFRS, [Wei88]), PMCFG, [KNSK92] and String Attributed Grammars [Eng86]). The semantics is (both in rewriting and least fixed point definitions) simple and elegant, and sheds som...

Tractability issues in extraposition grammar

Extraposition Grammar (XG) was introduced in Per81] as a grammar formalism whose increase in recognizing power over context free grammars is limited to mechanisms for adequate description of structural phenomena occurring in natural language. This paper proposes versions of XG whose xed recognition problems are in deterministic polynomial and exponential time; furthermore it is shown that the u...

A generalization of mildly context-sensitive formalisms

In (Boullier 98), we presented range concatenation grammars (RCGs), a syntactic formalism which is a variant of literal movement grammars (LMGs), described in (Groenink 97), and which is also related to the framework of LFP developed by (Rounds 88) . In fact it may be considered to lie halfway between their respective string and integer versions; RCGs retain from the string version of LMGs or L...

An Elegant Grammatical Formalism for the Class of Polynomial-time Recognisable Languages

We deene a grammar formalism equivalent to non-combinatorial literal movement grammar (LMG) as outlined in Gro95b], in such a way that it is easily recognized as a straightforward extension of linear context-free rewriting systems (LCFRS, Wei88]) and parallel multiple context-free grammars (PMCFG, KNSK92]). We show that the languages this formalism describes are precisely the languages recognis...

The Role of Literal Meaning in the Comprehension of Non-Literal Constructions

Based on psychological studies which show that metaphors and other non-literal constructions are comprehended in the same amount of time as comparable literal constructions, some researchers have concluded that literal meaning is not computed during comprehension of non-literal constructions. In this paper, we suggest that the empirical evidence does not rule out the possibility that literal me...
